This weekend I downloaded Knoppix, which is an ISO image for a bootable CD. Pop the CD into a machine that boots off CD-ROM, reboot, and it boots into KDE on Debian 3. As many of you will know, Debian is a distribution of that operating system whose kernel was initially developed by a Finnish student. Anyway, the CD – without touching your hard drive, mind you – boots into a full version of said OS with KDE desktop and plenty of software (apparently approx 2GB worth). Included in this lot is enough to do a pretty comprehensive eval of the operating system and many popular applications (OpenOffice is there, for instance), as well as drivers and autodetect mechanisms for most hardware. Also, you can mount an NTFS partition read-only, or a FAT partition read-write, which could be of utility if you forget your admin password or would like to take a snapshot of your system without buying Ghost. There’s also a cute picture of a penguin while it boots up.
